内容記述 "The aim of this present paper is to explain the Conjunction + Participle Construction in English, through the investigation into the development of the participle construction in the history of the English language. Concerning the origins and the way the construction has been frequently used in contemporary English, the present writer first draws an outline of the studies on the Conjunction + Participle Construction and describes how the distinguished traditional and descriptive grammarians such as Maetzner, Sweet, Curme, Jespersen, Zandvoort, Quirk, and Declerck treat of it, and then he introduces Rhyne's views and theory with his comments. It is 0. P. Rhyne who made an attempt to survey the origin of the Conjunction + Participle Construction in English, particularly through exhaustive examinations into the complete works of Shakespeare, which led him to the conclusion that the construction can trace its history back to the 16th century. Since Rhyne's approach to the reality of Conjunction + Participle Constructions can be accepted in that the researcher has a neutral standpoint, advocating 'hybrid-theory', between the 'participle' growth and the 'conjunction = dependent clause' growth, the present writer pays much attention to Rhyne's study (1910), though admitting the inadequacy of its explanation. To make up for this insufficiency, it is necessary to broad-mindedly take a historical point of view of Present-Participle Constructions including 'absolute participles' and Latin and French influences on the structure in English. This peculiar structure, in a sense, can be referred to as a product of the transition to an analytic language from a synthetic one in Early Modern English."
