| 内容記述 | "While race concerns educators in many multi-racial societies such as the United States, Japan has not looked at race and cultural diversity as important aspects of the society. Thus, not many studies investigated racial perception of Japanese children. This study attempts to describe racial preference and identity among Japanese children replicating some elements of the Dolls Test by Clark and Clark (1947). Two pairs of dolls that represent black/white young boys and teenage girls were used. The test preoedure required subjects, whose age ranges from three to five, to answer to five questions by choosing one doll over the other, or neither of them. Questions are; 1) Which doll do you like to play with? 2) Which doll is a beautiful doll? 3) Which doll is a bad doll? 4) Which doll is an American? 5) Which doll do you resemble? The result shows that Japanese children have a tendency for pro-white overall. Subjects tended to choose white dolls for the liked and the beautiful, and black dolls for the bad. More children pointed Black dolls as Americans. They tended either to identify with white dolls or to avoid clear definitions on which resembled them. Fewer children identified themselves with black dolls. This study showed that Japanese children, whose ages are three to five, have already acquired stereotypical perception regarding racial stratificaion in the society. However, their perception of the racial feature of Americans contradicted the researchers'assumption that they would choose white dolls. Future studies should focus on the mechanisms of racial preference and identity in Japanese children as well as their developmental procedure of racial perception. More extended number and range of subjects may contribute to answer these quetions." | |||||
