| 内容記述 | 1590年代は、外国商人の追放とSteelyardの閉鎖があり、排外感情の高まりと共に、演劇では外国人の登場人物が増えた時期である。しかし排外感情にも徐々に変化が見られ、1590年代後半になるとあからさまな敵対心は薄れ、ステージ上の外国人たちは、次第にからかいの対象となっていった。本作品ではポルトガル系ユダヤ人のピサロの娘たちは、父の薦める外国人の金持ちとの結婚よりも、借金が返せず、担保の土地をピサロに取られそうになっているイングランド人との結婚を望む。混血の娘たちが父親のピサロの血統よりもイングランド人の母親の血統を重視し、尚且つイングランド人との結婚を望んだことからも分かるように、イングランドの優越はゆるぎないものであることが劇の基調となっている。そのような中でピサロはイングランド人の優越を確認するために利用されているに過ぎず、旧来の価値観によるステレオタイプ的ユダヤ人金貸しとしての役柄から脱却しきれていない。そこにはロンドンの経済的ハイブリッド化に対するイングランド人の嫌悪、土地を中心とした封建主義的経済が、外国資本の流入による経済構造に取り込まれてゆく事に対するイングランド人の拒絶感が存在する。 | |||||||||||

| 内容記述 | This paper discusses the following points concerning William Haughton’s city comedy, Englishmen for My Money（1958）, based on Haughton’s perceptions of language and the social and economic conditions of the time. What did “Englishness” mean for the marriage of the daughters of the Portuguese Jewish merchant and usurer Pisaro? In addition, though Pisaro is not called a Jew, how does he differ from the Jews who have appeared in the plays before this one? He wishes to marry his three daughters—Laurentia, Marina, and Mathea—to well-meaning foreign suitors, but the daughters choose English suitors. Having won Battle of Armada, England’s next task was to achieve market dominance. England’s commercial rivalry with foreign countries can be seen in the presence of suitors associated with a flourishing land of trade and finance. Although the play represents a new way of life for Jews in the context of economic development, fundamentally, the role of Jewish Pisaro does not change that much from other Jews depicted in the Renaissance dramas before. The play emphasizes the English language as a sign of England’s glory, and it is noteworthy that the drama attempted to capture “Englishness” from the cultural aspect of language. | |||||||||||
